Apple Market - Saturday 22nd October Apple Day is celebrated on 21st October. Apple Day is an annual celebration of apple, orchards and local distinctiveness, initiated by Common Ground in 1990 it has since been celebrated each year by people organising their own local events. The Tavistock Farmers Market is marking the occasion with a number of apple related events at their market on 23rd October 2004. This will include a display of local apple varieties, a demonstration of a working apple press, apple tasting, longest apple peel competition, and the opportunity to buy a range of local apples and apple products, including local varieties of apple trees. The First
Tavistock Apple Day, which took place in 2001, was a small affair but
very successful. The main event centred around local apple experts, James
Evans and Mary Martin who brought with them a display of about 30 local
varieties of apple, and were able to assist people in identification and
advice etc. They had a steady stream of people all morning. The Tamar
Orchard Volunteers also provided some leaflets and literature and the
Tamar Valley Countryside Service/CDT provided a display of their new market
gardening project. Pete Mayston brought his apple press along with a selection
of apples for sale, and Westlake Farm, Countryman Cider sold juice and
cider. The WI also sold a range of apple products.
